For a seat on a party boat, $117.60 to $158.20 a head once the mandatory extras are on. For the whole boat, $954 to $2,400 depending on the charter and the length, split by however many of you turn up. The number worth carrying around is not the ticket though — it is the surcharge, which runs from nothing to 13% across the boats on this page. Two operators selling from the same dock through the same booking platform can differ by more than a tenth of the fare, and neither of them shows you that until the payment screen.

It is a seat for somebody who is coming along but not fishing, and only one boat here sells one: $120 against $140 for an angler, or $135.60 and $158.20 once the extras are on. That $22.60 gap is the whole difference between an eight-hour day holding a rod and an eight-hour day watching other people hold one. If you were going to sit on the boat anyway, it is very hard to argue for the cheaper seat. Where it genuinely earns its place is the person who would otherwise stay ashore — a grandparent, a partner who does not fish, someone minding a small child — because on every other listing on this page they pay the full angler fare or they do not come.

Because the price is not the only number, and on the two that matter most it wins. It carries 25 people against 40 on the cheapest boat, so you are not fishing shoulder to shoulder. It is the only shared boat that confirms the crew cleans, fillets and bags your catch — the others leave that unstated, and cleaning is normally charged by the fish or by the pound. And its surcharge at checkout is the lowest of the three at 10%, against 12% and 13%. It is still the dearest seat per hour on this page by around nine dollars, and we are not going to pretend otherwise: what that buys is fewer elbows and nothing left to settle at the dock.

They are closer than the tickets suggest, which is the point of doing the sum. Once the extras are on, the six-hour boat works out at $19.60 an hour and the eight-hour boat at $19.78 an hour — near enough identical. The longest trip is not the cheapest trip; it is simply the longest. What you are really choosing between is two more hours of fishing and a shorter day, and with young children on board that is a real decision rather than a rounding error.

Neither, and the comparison is usually made dishonestly. A seat is cheap because you are one of up to 40 people fishing the same water; a charter is expensive because the captain is working for your group alone. The fair measure is dollars per hour per rod in the water. On that basis the shared boats sit far below the private ones, which is exactly what you would expect — you are buying a different thing, not a worse one.

Less than six hours, and nobody on this page will tell you how much less. The ride out eats the clock at both ends, and the further out the boat goes the more of your booked time it takes. Only one operator here publishes a distance at all — ten to forty miles offshore — and not one of them publishes a travel time. It is the single biggest unadvertised variable in the category: two boats can both sell you “six hours” and hand you materially different amounts of fishing. If it matters to you, ask how far the boat runs before you book rather than working it out on the way there. Not if the boat covers it, and two of the charters here say they do — one of them covers the whole group. The rest have not published either way, which is why those boxes are amber above. It is a small cost but it is a genuinely annoying one to discover at the dock, so it is worth one question when you book.

One operator states it explicitly and at no extra charge. The others have not published a policy. Cleaning is a real cost and it is frequently charged per fish or per pound, so if you expect to come home with dinner, ask before you book rather than after you land it.

This is the most useful question on the page and it has a clean answer, because one operator sells both on the same boats, for the same hours, at the same price: $900 for four hours either way. So price is not the deciding factor — the fish is. Book the shark trip if you want the fight and a photograph, because most shark species here are protected and go back in the water. Book the inshore Gulf trip if you want to eat what you catch: snapper, grouper, triggerfish and mackerel, cleaned free at the dock. Same money, same morning, completely different day out.

Mostly, and for a good reason: the majority of the shark species caught off Destin are protected. The operator’s own words are that these trips are “primarily catch & release”. Anything you land that is within regulations you may keep, and they will clean it — but if your plan is a freezer full of fillets, a bottom fishing trip is the trip you want. They partner with a taxidermy company for replica mounts instead, which is the actual souvenir on offer.

It varies more than anything else on this page, and it is the thing readers check last. At one end, a full refund with 24 hours notice. At the other, 30 days notice required and $250 kept even if you give it — on a listing that carries a “free cancellation” badge. We have printed the policy rather than the badge. Weather cancellations called by the captain are refunded or rescheduled everywhere we looked, and no-shows are charged in full everywhere we looked.

Yes, and almost nobody says so. At least one shared boat needs a minimum number of anglers before it will sail; if the booking does not fill, they offer you another day or your money back. That is perfectly fair, but it is worth knowing if you have driven in for one morning and cannot move the date. It is a bigger risk on shoulder-season weekdays than in July, and it is a reason to book the busier departure rather than the quiet one.

Early. The shared boats go at 5:30am and 7:30am, which is not a typo and not negotiable — the wind builds through the morning and the ride out takes a chunk of your booked hours. One private operator runs four departures a day including two in the afternoon, and that is the one to look at if a pre-dawn alarm on holiday is a dealbreaker.

Because the operator has not published them. We would rather show you a labelled gap than a confident guess: an invented fuel surcharge or an assumed cleaning fee would make the page look more complete and make it less useful.
